This unit introduces students to the disciplines of translation and interpreting. The unit provides an overview of the chronological evolution of theories and their application to translation and interpreting practice. Theories relevant to translation practice including linguistic theories such as equivalence theory and translation shifts as well as functionalist theories will be discussed. The overview of interpreting theory starts with a survey of the early cognitive theories of interpreting and their relevance to interpreting practice in the simultaneous and consecutive modes. An introduction to the sociolinguistic approach to interpreting provides students with an understanding of the interactional management of dialogue interpreting.

 This unit aims to develop students' translator competence at the basic level. The focus is placed particularly on the process and products of translation in a wide range of text types, the achievement of equivalence at various levels (eg, textual level), and the exploration of key translation problems and their solutions.

 This unit (4 credit points) is designed to introduce the concept of interpreting and develop key interpreting techniques such as listening skills, text analysis, memory retention and note-taking, while improving B language (your first foreign language) listening comprehension competence  and A language (your mother tongue) competence which are expected of a professional interpreter. 

This unit is concerned with the use of technologies in the context of translation and interpreting. It introduces a wide range of techniques and skills that are relevant to using computational tools as translation aids, and explores how various computational resources (such as corpora, terminology tools and translation memories) can be used to help increase translation efficiency and productivity.
