TRAN 832

This unit introduces students to strategies used in public speaking, such as debates, group discussions and extempore speeches as a means of developing self-confidence, conviction and fluency in speaking. Speaking in public is not something that most people enjoy, and it can make them self-conscious and hesitant. Therefore, students need to be given practice in speaking in front of an audience. This unit contains activities that should help students develop public speaking skills. It should also help them to be aware of the conventions of non-verbal communication such as gestures and eye contact.

TRAN 833

In the Advanced Writing Course, students will write different types of essays and expand various writing skills including error correction, grammar usage, punctuation usage, style, summarizing, and paraphrasing. The course will help them to improve their ability to write different types of essays and fine tune their writing skills. A variety of writing concepts and techniques are illustrated to guide them in developing clearer, more organized writing, a framework for producing well-organized translatins. Also, Students will have the chance to practice effective revision of their work with the guidance of their professor.

TRAN 870

This unit introduces students to the disciplines of translation and interpreting. The unit provides an overview of the chronological evolution of theories and their application to translation and interpreting practice. Theories relevant to translation practice including linguistic theories such as equivalence theory and translation shifts as well as functionalist theories will be discussed. The overview of interpreting theory starts with a survey of the early cognitive theories of interpreting and their relevance to interpreting practice in the simultaneous and consecutive modes. An introduction to the sociolinguistic approach to interpreting provides students with an understanding of the interactional management of dialogue interpreting.

TRAN 821

This unit (4 credit points) is designed to introduce the concept of interpreting and develop key interpreting techniques such as listening skills, text analysis, memory retention and note-taking, while improving B language (your first foreign language) listening comprehension competence  and A language (your mother tongue) competence which are expected of a professional interpreter.

TRAN 877

This unit aims to develop students' translator competence at the basic level. The focus is placed particularly on the process and products of translation in a wide range of text types, the achievement of equivalence at various levels (eg, textual level), and the exploration of key translation problems and their solutions.

교과목명                                                                                             내용

TRAN 820

The unit provides students with practical opportunities to develop their translation competencies further. This unit involves the translation of various types of texts.

Students discuss problems encountered in the course of translation such as text analysis and stylistics, register, language usage as well as equivalence at different levels. It is aimed at introducing strategies to solve more challenging problems and leading students to establish their own strategies.

TRAN 822

This unit is designed to further develop students' interpreting skills so that they demonstrate more advanced strategies in core interpreting techniques, such as listening skills, text analysis, memory retention, note-taking and oral translation skills. Students engage in reading, research and practice to develop further critical analysis and reflective capabilities in relation to their interpreting practice and academic work.

TRAN 871

This unit is concerned with the use of technologies in the context of translation and interpreting. It introduces a wide range of techniques and skills that are relevant to using computational tools as translation aids, and explores how various computational resources (such as corpora, terminology tools and translation memories) can be used to help increase translation efficiency and productivity.

TRAN 902

At the higher levels of translation and interpreting practice, practitioners are required to be familiar with and able to draw on a deep understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of the fields of Translation Studies and Interpreting Studies. This is necessary in order to creatively resolve complex problems arising in practice. In this unit, students will deepen their knowledge and understanding of the important theoretical movements of the past century.
